Stavisky: Stavisky family thanks CCs

Published by Jason Fudge on

Dear Friends of Sam Stavisky–the balm of your friendship and your devotion to my dad has been a salve for the ache that our family has experienced these past weeks. What a gift that my dad, in the second half of his life, renewed his passion for the Marines and his beloved combat correspondents through each of you. You clearly made extra efforts to keep my father connected, engaged and involved….and my last conversation with him on the day he passed away, included how honored he was about the The Sam Stavisky Combat Reporting Award.
My dad learned to use the computer at age 85 and breezed through two lap tops and a Dell on his way to writing his book. But most of all, my dad eagerly anticipated his e-mail correspondence from each of you and the meetings with his compatriots, when he was able to do so. He truly loved being a part of your group and beamed broadly when he recounted events, conversations and the plans for the Denig endeavor.
My father was always upbeat about the future, having the equanimity that comes with age. But it was the inclusion in your group, United States Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association for which he was most proud. The unshakable truth is that once a Marine, always a Marine (even for those mild mannered, bespectacled older guys).
The magnificent wreath, your outpouring of affection and the attendance of Jack, Fred and Don at my father’s funeral at Arlington National Cemetery was a tonic for our profound sorrow. It is impossible to adequately express our gratitude.
On behalf of our family, we thank you for your many kindnesses,
Judy Stavisky
