“Project Mo” and Denig Memorial Announcement

Published by Jason Fudge on

As you are now (or will shortly) be receiving your newsletters “Now Hear This” we feel an explanation is necessary regarding proposed memorials on Pages 5 and 8; one for Bob Morrisey, the other for BrigGen. Robert L. Denig Sr. at the Museum, which follows this announcement.

Four days ago we announced on this site that the revived San Diego Chapter, named now after Bob Morrisey, was launching a drive to secure $1200 for a memorial to “Mo” at Mount Soledad in San Diego.  As we might have anticipated, within four days the amount was reached.

We had planned on an announcement about a memorial to BrigGen. Robert L. Denig Sr. at the Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico on or about December 1.  Because of the early success of “Project Mo,” we are proceeding immediately with the Denig Memorial which is being announced elsewhere on this site.  We hope that those of you who planned on supporting the Morrisey project will channel your efforts to the long overdue recognition of BrigGen. Denig who started the CC program shortly after the beginning of World War II.

Marine Corps Museum Gives Go Ahead for Denig Memorial

Possible memorial design

Following an announcement by the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico that a long-sought memorial to BrigGen. Robert L. Denig Sr., could be erected, the USMCCCA Foundation Board of Directors asked both Fred Lash and Walt Ford to coordinate with the Museum as to plans, cost, etc.

In the “Now Hear This” newsletter it was announced this project could cost $35,000.  The newsletter article also said a campaign to raise this money would be announced following the “Project Mo” memorial to Bob Morrisey at Mount Soledad in San Diego.  As you can see elsewhere on this site, within four days the $1200 for the Morrisey Memorial was reached.  Hopefully, those of you who wished to contribute to the Morrisey Memorial will now consider helping us with the Denig Memorial.

Subsequently, both Lash and Ford have notified the Foundation Board that a very suitable memorial to our founder could cost less than $19,000.  This simplified design is shown here.  The bronze plaque would salute BrigGen. Denig, his “demons” and all who have participated in telling the Marine Corps story since the early days of World War II.

Realizing this is a costly venture, the Foundation Board has set May 1 as the deadline for the campaign to reach $10,000, versus the higher amount shown in the newsletter.  When the amount is reached or pledged, the Foundation will notify the Marine Corps Museum to proceed with the memorial.  If $10,000 is not pledged by that date, the Foundation will evaluate the amounts pledged and make a decision to either fund the remaining amount or offer donors their money back.

Contributions to the Denig Memorial can be made in increments with pledges not to exceed three years.  As was the case with “Project Mo,” a link on the left side of this page will take the donor to a page where either PayPal can be used or (on the lower left corner of the PayPal page) you can simply use your credit card.  For those who would rather deal with CCHQ direct, checks or credit cards may be used.

Contributor’s names will be carried on the website and in the newsletter.
