Did you join because of 9/11?

The National Museum of the Marine Corps seeks our help:

We have two curators conducting research for a temporary exhibit that will highlight the 10th anniversary of 9/11. A portion of this exhibit is intended to focus on Marines who enlisted or sought commissions as a result of 9/11. After months of research the curators have reached a bit of an impasse. Their deadline for information gathering concludes on 1 July and they have not yet been able to find enough people who have a story to tell AND are willing to tell that story for an exhibit.

Consequently I am asking for your assistance.

If you know of a Marine who enlisted or sought a commission as a result of 9/11, please have them contact Gretchen Winterer and Carrie Bowers. They have set up an G-mail account: NMMC911Exhibit@gmail.com. Do not have these people write E-mails to our .mil accounts, as our inboxes are perpetually “over the limit.”

We have some excellent candidates, but we’re missing women and Marines of color. Infantry Marines who participated in TF Rhino or the retaking of the American Embassy in Kabul would be helpful. It would also be great to have more input from diverse MOSs, too. Of particular interest are the artillery, aviation, civil affairs, ComCam, engineer, LAV, logistic, motor-T, PAO, tracks, and security OccFlds. Perhaps you know of someone who came in as a response to 9/11 and has since EASd, medically retired from wounds, or was killed in action.

The questions and information that Gretchen and Carrie are seeking include:
Marine’s name and rank:
Entry date:
What about 9/11 made the Marine enter service:
What made the Marine join the Corps in particular:
Boot camp/graduation photo.
Environmental portrait (picture of the Marine at work, preferably in OEF/OIF theater of operations).

The exhibit will open in September and with your help it will be another homerun. Thanks for encouraging your best Marines to contact Carrie or Gretchen at NMMC911Exhibit@gmail.com.
