Combat correspondents in Kuwait revisited

Published by Jason Fudge on

First Marine Division combat correspondents (left to right) Sgt. Jose Guillen, Cpl. John Hoellwarth, SSgt. John Jamison, and I Marine Expeditionary Force combat correspondent Sgt. Colin Wyers are pictured in Kuwait during the troop buildup there before Iraq was invaded in early 2003. With the government-issued cameras used by Jamison and Wyers in short supply, Guillen and Hoellwarth each photographed the war using the personally owned cameras pictured hanging around their necks. Wyers spent the invasion at the MEF headquarters in Camp Commando, Kuwait. Jamison traveled with the division headquarters as its PAO chief throughout the invasion. Guillen and Hoellwarth spent the push toward Baghdad assigned to 11th Marines and 1st Marines respectively, the sole public affairs Marine for each regiment. Both Guillen and Jamison were awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” for their actions in Iraq and their award citations hang in the Marine Corps Student Detachment at Defense Information School in Fort Meade, Md.
