The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is accepting nominations for its Annual Awards program until January 8, 2014. Each year the annual awards program honors Marines and civilians alike, who have produced outstanding work portraying an aspect of the Marine Corps’ 238 years of traditions, culture and service. The Foundation encourages reporters, writers, photographers, film makers and other artists to submit their own works. Others may nominate someone else’s work they believe merits recognition.
“Fewer Americans have a personal connection to the Marine Corps and military service in general, so the preservation of the Marine Corps experience is increasingly important,” said Lt. Gen. Robert R. Blackman, Jr., president and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. “Photographs, articles, books, movies, poems and all forms of art educate our Nation about the history of the Marine Corps and ensure we never forget the sacrifices made by those who have earned the title, Marine.”
Awards are presented in 15 categories, including journalism, documentary, literature, screenplay, photography and poetry. The awards submissions will be reviewed by a distinguished and diverse panel of editors from major regional and national media outlets, as well Marines, authors and noted photographers. Awards will be presented at the Foundation’s annual ceremony on April 26, 2014.

Dumfries, Va. (October 3, 2013) – The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is now accepting nominations for its Annual Awards program. Each year the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation presents awards honoring individuals whose outstanding, creative work preserves or highlights an aspect of Marine Corps history, traditions, culture or service. Marines and civilians alike are encouraged to submit their own entries or the distinguished work of others for award consideration. Col. Sally J. Pritchett, USMC (Ret.)
Colonel Sara “Sally” J. Pritchett of Springfield, VA, received the Abigail Allen Award for Service to Women during the 124th Annual Alumni Association Awards Picnic earlier this month. The award is given to honor an Alfred alumnus/a in recognition of distinctive career achievement, community service, or avocational pursuits that have improved the quality of women’s lives.
A member of the lfred University 1962 graduating class, Pritchett was nominated by Kerry Kautzman, professor of Spanish and women’s studies, Dr. Julia Overton-Healy, director of the Women’s Leadership Center (WLC), and other members of the Women’s Studies Executive Committee for her service in the United States Marine Corps.
Pritchett served in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) from 1964-87 primarily working in public affairs. She retired as a Navy Information Officer at the Pentagon. Following her discharge, she spent two years as president of the International Women’s Forum.

WHERE: The GI Film Festival is the premier awards venue for independent filmmakers involved in the creation of films that celebrate the heroic stories of the American Armed Forces engaged in the worldwide struggle for liberty. This prestigious film festival is now in its fourth year and will be held in Washington, DC at the Carnegie Institution for Science on May 13-17.
The review and analysis, sometimes involving spirited debate, consumed about 32 hours in four separate sessions over a two-day period. When it ended on March 6, the 12 judges, meeting in Washington , D.C. , had selected the best from nearly 1,000 entries in this year’s USMCCCA and the Marine Corps’ Division of Public Affairs Merit Awards program.
And a consensus seemed to emerge from the volunteer civilian judges that perhaps this 41st annual competition ranked as one of the very best, at least over recent years.
The first place winners in 47 categories encompassing photo, print and broadcast journalism, along with the runners up, will be honored at the USMCCCA’s gala awards banquet during the annual conference at Hampton , VA in September.

“We reviewed a great deal of solid journalistic craft,” said broadcast judge and former Marine CC Chas Henry, currently executive director of communications at the U.S. Naval Institute. “Few of the many broadcast entries, however, related to activities in Iraq or Afghanistan …the public affairs community is doing a disservice to Marines in the field if it is not applying its internal electronic production skills to tell stories of Marines’ extraordinary accomplishments.”
Henry added: “I was encouraged to see continued improvement in the overall quality of these productions. I’d encourage Marines to consider their storytelling work an obligation. Marines are in tough places, undertaking tough work on behalf of their fellow citizens – too often out of sight of those Americans back home. Don’t let their efforts go unseen.”

ATTENTION MARINE COMBAT ARTISTS AND ILLUSTRATORS!
The U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association shall render Merit Awards in the categories of Combat Art and Illustration at the 68th Annual USMCCCA Awards Banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Hampton, Va. on Thursday night Sept. 17. First and Second Place Awards and an Honorable Mention in both categories shall be recognized. Traditionally, award recipients travel to the conference on command-funded orders to personally accept their plaque (first place) or certificate (second place and honorable mention). Eligibility: any active duty Marine or Marine reservist who was in a duty status at the time the art or illustration was created.
Criteria: work must have been publicly displayed (art show, MCX lobby, etc.) or produced in support of command operational or training requirements (posters, leaflets, etc.). Products must be unclassified and rendered during CY08. Media may include sculpture, paintings, drawings and illustrations in both color and black and white. Computer graphics will be considered, but art used must be the Marine’s original work.
