Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Dies

Few of today’s Marines will remember that former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs “Punch” Sulzberger, who died Saturday at age 86, served in the Corps as an informational services officer in Korea, rising to the rank of captain before taking his discharge. When we arrived in the winter of 1951, Sulzberger was a first lieutenant and, if memory serves, relieved 1stLt. Jerry O’Leary as Division ISO. Staffers at the time included 2ndLt. Frank Goss and MSgt. Spencer Gartz. Strangely, in his book, Last to Know, First to Go, Gary Cameron makes no mention of Sulzberger’s service. We also remember in the late-50s attending a training session hosted by the New York Information Office and being treated to a tour of the Times and lunch with Sulzberger. Jack T.
