Father, grandfather, great-grandfather, civic activist, humanitarian, attorney, Marine Corps officer, passed away on February 24, at age ninety-two.
Born in Greenwich, Conn. on November 11, 1916, the son of Mamie and Simon Schlosberg, brother of Helen Panitz and Sandra Schulman, he attended the local schools, and enrolled at the University of Arkansas, graduating with a BSBE in 1939.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, graduated from Officers Training as a Second Lieutenant, and joined the Fourth Marine Division, where he served gallantly at Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Wounded in action, he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Serving as a photo officer on Iwo Jima, he was entrusted with the first official motion picture film taken during that epic battle. Returning to the mainland, he reported to Warner Brothers in Burbank, assisting in the making of the landmark film, “To the Shores of Iwo Jima.”
In April of 1945, he met Joyce Bernice Koch on a blind date. By September, they were engaged, and after his transfer to duty in Honolulu, they were married on November 11.
Released from active duty in 1947, he founded a photographic supply business, “Movie Supply of Hawaii.” However, three years later, recalled to active duty at the outset of the Korean War, he sold his business and moved his wife and two daughters to his duty station in San Francisco. Promoted to Major in 1952, he served until his release from active duty in 1955.
That same year, after graduation from law school, he relocated to Los Angeles, and began a distinguished career specializing in Entertainment Law. His first major client was fellow Marine, Leon Uris. For the next forty years, Herb Schlosberg was renowned for his representation of a long list of novelists, television and film writers and producers.
A leader in the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association, a paramount figure and prime organizer in the celebrity-sponsored golf tournament for the benefit of Toys for Tots, he never allowed his work schedule to interfere with his family or his philanthropic and civic activities. An active member of the Los Angeles Marine Corps Reserve Unit, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel in 1976.
Avid golfers, he and his wife Joyce traveled the United States and beyond, playing in charity tournaments. After 57 years of marriage, Joyce Schlosberg died in 2002.
